Follonica
In the center of the gulf of Follonica, between the promontory of Piombino and Punta Ala, lies the beautiful seaside town of Follonica.
In ancient times the town was renowned for working iron with it’s name being derived from the italian word ‘fulloni’, the antique bellows used for the furnaces. During the Grand Duchy of Leopold II, Follonica became an important industrial center and a modern steel and iron factory was built close to the pre-existing Medicean furnace. Today, this factory remains intact, with a number of its buildings being converted into the impressive Iron Museum and Library.
In recent years the city has seen the development of small and medium sized industry, as well as becoming a significant and contemporary seaside resort. Affectionately known as the “Rimini of the Maremma,” for its hotels by the sea and animated nightlife. Follonica offers modern and efficient facilities perfect for families and youths, including wide beaches equipped for sailing and scuba diving and numerous itineries for walking, hiking, bicycling and horse back riding within the Mediterranean countryside. In addition, this seaside town also offers a wide range of sporting activities, such as tennis, roller skating, minigolf, soccer and horse back riding.
One of the town’s most interesting and celebrated events is the Follonica Carnival, put on each year at the start of Feburary. Begun in 1949, this carnival still draws innumerable visitors, both young and old, to the streets to enjoy the enchanting costume parades and beautifully constructed floats. In recent years, various musical and cultural initiatives have been reintroduced, as well as county fairs and pageants, often done in collaboration with neighbouring towns.
