Giannutri Island
Giannutri Island can be found together with the islands of Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa and Gorgona, and is affectionately known as the nature park of Tuscany’s archipelago. The island itself is about an 1 hour and half away from Porto Santo Stefano and can be easily reached by ferry boat.
Shaped like a horseshoe, Giannutri is a natural paradise of extreme tranquility, perfect for those who want to get away from urbanization and enjoy the mediterranean wildlife.
Recognised as a marina park, some parts of Giannutri are closed to the public, including the underwater caves of Grottoni.
However tourists can still exprience the area’s beautiful reefs and unique marine wildlife with any number of the island’s scenic dives and other aquatic activities.
In spring, the island’s seagull population treat guests to the simple but spectacular display of nest building. Whilst one Giannutri’s most exciting annual events, visitors must pay attention not to disturbe the often camouflaged nests, as this can be hazardous.
Aside from it’s natural beauty, Giannutri Island also has an entralling history and is home the ancient and stunning Roman seaside villa, Villa Domizia. Off it’s the shores also lies what remains of the famous ship Anna Bianca, wrecked in 1990 and now 45 metres below sea level.
