Magliano in Toscana
Magliano in Toscana is a small but enchanting Medieval town, situated on the ridge of a hill and surrounded by long stretches of olive trees and vineyards.
Archological digs in the area have revealed various Etruscan necropoleis, indicating that Magliano was an Etruscan settlement before falling into Roman possession. The town itself has a turbulent and interesting history beginning in the 9th century under the uncontested dominion of the Aldobrandeschi family. Later it became the property of the Sienese Republic, who fortified Magliano with impressive city walls. These walls are still in excellent condition and preserve the oldest and most beautiful part of this ancient town. Near Magliano lie the towns of Montiano and Pereta. Both date from the same period as Magliano and are equally as stunning, consisting of small but charming houses, tightly set against each other and often linked by supporting arches.
Aside from it’s unique historical and artistical monuments, Magliano is also renowned for the production of the excellent DOC. wine, Morellino di Scansano. One of the best in Europe.
